You can travel to Rio Drake Farm by plane, boat, bus or car (see below). We offer a free pick-up service from your arrival point in Drake Bay. In order to be able to pick you up (in time) please let us know about your arrival with anticipation.
Sansa and Nature Air have daily flights from San José to Drake Bay.
There are daily boats leaving from Sierpe to Drake Bay (about 1 hour boat ride) at 11:30 a.m. We recommend taking that one ($15 p.p. = cheaper and you get here by daylight). Ask for Alex (“Chancha”) in Sierpe at the boat station, he will be your Captain. There is usually also a boat at around 3:30 p.m. (20$ p.p.).
There are (collective) taxis from Palmar Norte to Sierpe (20-30min., $5 p.p. if collective). To get to Palmar Norte you can take a bus from TRACOPA (either from San José, Quepos, San Isidro, Neily, Dominical, Uvita…).
If you come from San José we recommend taking the one at 5 a.m. in order to catch the early boat.
If you come from Quepos, you need to take a bus to Quepos Hospital or a taxi out of the center to the TRACOPA bus station where the bus passes around 8 a.m.. Ticket needs to be bought the day before at the Quepos center bus station.
From Uvita there is a bus leaving around 9:30 a.m. to Palmar Norte.
There is a minibus leaving from La Palma to Drake Bay at 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. monday to saturday ($5 per person). Get out in the village El Progreso at the “entrada al aeropuerto”. However, this bus is leaving irregularly especially in raining season. If possible, we recommend taking the boat instead. A taxi from La Palma all the way to Rio Drake Farm costs $100.
If you come from Puerto Jimenez there are busses at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. leaving to La Palma.
If you come from Neily there are buses at 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. leaving to Puerto Jimenez, and you must get out in Rincón where the bus from La Palma passes around 11:45 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. (if you take the early one you will have chance to get all the way to La Palma if you wish).
To get all the way to Drake Bay by car we recommend a car with 4 wheel drive. You need to pass four streams between Rincón and El Progreso (please pass them slowly), although it is not necessary to cross the big river “Rio Drake” to get to Rio Drake Farm. In raining season, we recommend to plan your arrival around midday or in the early afternoon in order to avoid possible heavy afternoon rain falls complicating the access due to rising rivers.
You need to drive all the way to Chacarita (gasoline station); there turn in the direction to Puerto Jimenez until Rincon. There you need to turn right in the direction to Drake (gravel road). Follow the road to Drake Bay until the little village El Progreso. El Progreso is before the big river “Rio Drake” and before the center of Drake (which is also called Agujitas). In Progreso, follow our sign to the right to Rio Drake Farm /Drake Airport. Follow the signs along the little road parallel to the runway until our parking area.
If your car does not have 4×4 or if you don´t feel like driving to Drake Bay, you can drive to Sierpe (it’s close to Palmar Norte) and let your car in a safe parking (e. g. “El combo”, the parking of “Don Jorge”, cost around $10 per night). Then take a boat to Drake Bay (see information above by boat).
